#InternationalHRday

Who we are

International HR Day was created to celebrate the role HR and the people profession plays in supporting organisations and the people within them. Since its launch in 2019, the day has grown into a worldwide celebration, bringing together people from across the globe to share their experiences and achievements. HR and people professionals are key to making workplaces more inclusive, fostering employee wellbeing, and enabling organisations to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Working group

The International HR Day working group is tasked with driving awareness, increasing reach and providing opportunities for engagement. This group works closely with national associations and organisations, sharing best practices and encouraging participation across borders. Their aim is to promote the role of HR and the people profession in creating workplaces where people can succeed and feel valued.

Working Group leaders

International HR Day is guided by a team of experienced HR leaders from various industries. They ensure that each year’s theme and topics reflect the ongoing needs and challenges of the HR community globally.

History

International HR Day has grown into a global celebration, recognising the vital role of HR and people professionals in shaping the modern workplace.

Origins & First Celebration (2016–2019)
The initiative began in 2016, led by Lithuania and the European Association for People Management (EAPM). By 2018, an official IHRD Committee was formed, and the first slogan and logo were created. The first celebration took place on 20 May 2019 across seven pilot countries.

Global Growth & Impact (2019–Present)
By 2024, over 80 countries actively participated, solidifying International HR Day as a key event for the HR profession. Activities range from conferences and webinars to global challenges, such as the Walk15 Challenge (2024), where 13,000+ participants from 75+ countries collectively walked over 6 million km.

Themes & Thought Leadership
Renowned speakers, including Paolo Gallo, Niamh McNamara, and Austėja Landsbergienė, have explored topics like leadership, ethical AI, and the future of work. Annual themes reflect HR’s evolving role, with “Shaping the New Future” (2019–2023) focusing on trust, inclusion, wellbeing, and sustainability.
